Vesak is celebrated islandwide

Vesak Poya day which marks the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of Lord Buddha is celebrated today (Apr. 29).
President Maithripala Sirisena in a statement in view of Vesak extended his wishes for a great Vesak celebration for all Buddhists around the world.
The President noted that Lord Buddha preached that human becomes a worthless person or a great person, not by his birth, but only through his actions.
This noble concept became a strong binding force of the entire humanity.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in his Vesak message said that Vesak is a time for reflection and appreciation of our humanity, and to lead a life full of equality, respect and understanding.
The Premier also said that the unity Government is determined to make the prospects of a harmonious society a reality through the protection of democratic rights of people.
Meanwhile, Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa issuing a message in view of Vesak said that the teaching of Buddhism had always helped in overcoming challenges faced by the country and people since the past.
However, he raised concerns that the Sangha who had protected the Sasana had been pressurized during recent times.
