The government declares today (May 02) as a day of mourning in recognition of the service rendered by the late Dr. Lester James Peiris to the cinema.
The funeral of the legendary Sri Lankan filmmaker will be held today with full state patronage at Independence Square from 4 pm onwards.
Dr. Lester James Peiris, who is credited with revolutionizing Sinhala cinema in the 1950s, passed away in Colombo on Sunday at the age of 99.
The funeral committee noted that renowned film director Adur Gopalsinham of Kerala who was a friend of Dr. Lester James Peiris is to arrive in the island today.
The remains of late Dr. Lester James Peiris will be placed until 10 am today at his residence located in Colombo 5.
Following religious proceedings, the remains would be brought to the Colombo Independence square and will be open to the public to pay their final respects from 12 noon to 3 pm.
