South hit by outbreak of severe pneumonia

Health authorities in the South have decided to limit the number of visitors to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital due to an outbreak of viral flu in the Southern Province.
The hospital authorities said that small children are more prone to this flu.
5 infants have already died in the past few weeks.
The highest number of cases are reported from Tangalle, Hambantota and Walasmulla areas.
The Director of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital Dr. Jayampathi Senanayake said that a special investigation has already begun to prevent the spread of the disease.
Meanwhile, a meeting was held at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital to discuss the actions to be taken to contain the disease, which is identified as an outbreak of severe pneumonia.
It has decided to launch a public awareness campaign targeting pre-school children and school children.
They have also decided to see the possibility of giving seasonal influenza vaccine.
