The Court of Appeal has decided to hear a petition filed by Janith Madushanka alias 'Podi Lasi', an organized criminal, who is under custody, seeking an order for the prison authorities to take steps to ensure his safety.

This was when the relevant petition was called before the Court of Appeal today (23) through a motion.

Accordingly, the bench comprising the Presiding Judge of the Court of Appeal, J.H.M. Nawas and Justice Sobhitha Rajakaruna directed the respondents to appear before the court on November 12.

The Superintendent of Boossa Prison, the Commissioner General of Prisons and the Acting Inspector General of Police have been named as respondents.

'Podi Lasi' has informed the court through his lawyer that he has been arrested in connection with several criminal cases and is currently being held at the Boossa Prison.

Janith Madushanka alias 'Podi Lasi' has stated in his petition that he has received serious threats to his life inside the prison and has stated that prison officials are bound to ensure the safety of a person's life.

Meanwhile, the Committee to Protect the Rights of Prisoners lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission today (23) regarding the death of Madush Lakshitha alias Makandure Madush who was killed in a recent shooting incident in the Maligawatta area.

They have called for a formal inquiry into the matter.
