Dr. Gunawardena assumed the position after it was vacated with the promotion of former Health Services Director-General, Dr. Anil Jasinghe to the position of Environment Ministry Secretary. Previously, Dr. Gunawardena worked in the capacity of the Director of the Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila.

Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Maha Sangha, Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Major General Sanjeewa Munasinghe and other officials of the Ministry were present on this occasion.

At the event, Dr. Gunawardena handed over the letter of assignment to Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi, after he assumed office as the Director-General of Health Services.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Gunawardena stated, "The COVID-19 epidemic is currently raging around the world. New clusters were also reported in our country. The health sector and Tri-Forces are jointly working together to control the situation. Quarantine curfews and travel restrictions have been imposed in some areas. Although the travel on the main roads is restricted, we still receive reports regarding the travel on the by-roads. We can only control the situation with the help of the public. So I request the support of the people for this work."
