The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) says that the government should take immediate action regarding the vacant positions in hospitals which directly affect the capacity of the hospitals during the coronavirus pandemic.
Therefore they urge the government to select suitable candidates for the vacancies in hospitals .
The association said in a statement that due to the declining efficiency of the Ministry of Health in the recent past there are 89 specialist medical service posts that are vacant.
There are two main types of appointments for specialist, transferable positions and non transferable. Most of these positions are non-transferable. The system is designed to appoint doctors to these positions based on seniority.
However, the Central Committee Member of the Government Medical Officers' Association, Dr. Prasad Colombage stated that the vacancies in hospitals are a direct factor in disrupting patient services since patients are being referred to teaching hospitals from other hospitals.
