More than 100 whales and dolphins have died in a mass stranding on the Chatham Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

According to the Department of Conservation of New Zealand, 97 pilot whales and three dolphins have died in the stranding, with 28 pilot whales and three dolphins having to be euthanised.

Mass strandings are reasonably common on the Chatham Islands with up to 1,000 animals dying in a single stranding in 1918 – the largest on record in New Zealand waters.
