The Presidential Commission appointed to Investigate the Easter Attack today called for evidence for the first time from former Director of the CID Shani Abeysekera.

Shani Abeysekera gave evidence from the Colombo National Hospital via Skype connecting with the Commission.

Shani Abeysekera was diagnosed with coronavirus infection on November 23 last year while on remand at the Mahara Prison, for a charge of fabricating evidence.

He was sent to the Polonnaruwa Gallella Intermediate Treatment Center and then to Welikanda Hospital and then to I. D. H. after that he was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital due to a heart attack while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Accordingly, Shani Abeysekera joined through Skype today from Ward 42 of the National Hospital to give evidence to the Presidential Commission investigating the Easter attack.

The Senior State Counsel questioned him as follows.

”‍ A Bomb blasts took place in Colombo, Negombo, Batticaloa and other areas on 21.04.2019. A number of related incidents had taken place before that. Do you remember the incident where two police officers were killed at the Vavunathivu police roadblock on 30.11.2018? Did you investigate this? ”

“We investigated the matter on the instructions of the IGP. We spent a lot of time investigating with the arrest and detention of a former LTTE member. But it was only after the Easter attack that we learned that the man had nothing to do with the murder. It was only a long time after that we came to know that this was done by Zaharan Hashim, who is associated with Muslim extremism, ”said Shani Abeysekera.

Attorney-at-Law Upul Kumarapperuma, appearing for Shani Abeysekera, said that he did not know whether his client had the documents to answer questions.

Shani Abeysekera said that the relevant documents were brought to him by the CID officers around 12 noon today and that he needed time to read them.

The Commission stated that as the term of office of the Presidential Commission is coming to an end, he should provide evidence from memory and, when necessary, examine the documents and respond.
