The United States, which has so far vaccinated more than 80 million people in its population, has taken steps to vaccinate apes for the first time in the world.

Nine apes at the San Diego Zoo in Los Angeles have been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

That includes four orangutans and five bonobo gorillas.

Among them is a Sumatran orangutan named Carin, who underwent the world's first open heart surgery in 1994.
