Internal sources report that the Cabinet of Ministers which is set to convene tomorrow (14) will be reviewing the decision taken to increase the fuel prices, following the protests by many parties.

The Cabinet is scheduled to gather at 05:00 p.m. tomorrow (14).

The Government decided to increase the fuel prices with effect from midnight on 11 June.

The price of 92 octane petrol increased by Rs. 20 per litre. The price of 95 octane petrol increased by Rs. 23 per litre. The price of a litre of auto diesel increased by Rs.7 and the price of a litre of super diesel increased by Rs.12. The Ministry of Finance announced that the price of kerosene also increased by Rs.7.

It was also reported by yesterday (12) afternoon that the requests have been directed from the ruling party itself to revise the fuel price hike.

In such a background, a special discussion was also held at the Energy Ministry.

Following an inquiry by Hiru News, a senior Government Minister stated that all the views expressed at present will be discussed at length at the Cabinet meeting to be held tomorrow.

It was reported previously that the fuel price hike was granted approval by a Cabinet Sub Committee.

However, internal sources reported that a proposal was made to increase fuel prices in view of the losses incurred by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation in comparison to the increase in fuel prices in the world market.

It had been discussed that the decision in this regard must be taken by the subject minister and that it was inappropriate to implement such a proposal in the prevailing situation.
