Following a party which was halted by the health department while it was being prepared to be held, while violating health guidelines in Gorakadeniya of Payagala, Kalutara, 85 persons have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

It was revealed that the party was planned to be held on 24 July, and that 35 persons had arrived at the house to assist with the preparations.

After the PHIs had halted the event, the homeowner had taken steps to deliver the cooked food prepared for the party to the invitees in packages.

It was revealed that the person who prepared the food was diagnosed with the virus and recent tests had revealed that almost 85 persons were tested positive for the virus.

The PHIs stated that nearly 40 families have bee directed to quarantine following the incident.

Among the 2,177 COVID patients reported yesterday (31), the highest number of COVID patients were identified from the Gampaha District, which was 441 patients.

From the Colombo District, 119 cases were reported, while 389 cases were reported from the Kalutara District.

Over 100 COVID cases have been reported from Puttalam, Matara, Ratnapura and Matale.

Another 27 cases have been reported among overseas returnees.

Since the beginning of the second coronavirus wave on 04 October, from the Colombo District, 70,637 COVID patients were reported.

During the same period, 54,812 COVID patients were reported from the Gampaha District, while 31,217 COVID patients were reported from the Kalutara District.

Police have arrested a suspect for assaulting a public health inspector with a mamoty in the Valachchenai area.

The seriously injured public health inspector was admitted to the Valachchenai hospital and later transferred to the Batticaloa hospital for further treatment.

It has been revealed that the assault had been as a result of the PHI asking the suspect to wear the face mask.

Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the law will be strictly enforced regarding assaults, harassment and criminal coercion of health personnel.

The suspect arrested in connection with the attack is to be produced before the Valachchenai Magistrate.

The Valachchenai police are conducting investigations into the incident.
