Sugar prices in the market have risen further. Market sources state that a kilogram of white sugar is currently sold at between Rs 160 and Rs 190.

Sugar wholesalers in Pettah stated that they did not have any sugar stocks. Accordingly, there is a shortage of sugar in areas outside Colombo as well.

Hiru News correspondents also stated that some shops only issue 500 grams of sugar per consumer.

The price of sugar has gone up again in a situation where the government has set a control price for it.

Accordingly, a kilogram of white sugar should be sold for Rs 122 and brown sugar for Rs 125.

The price of a kilogram of sugar has risen sharply to Rs. 230 due to the concealment of sugar stocks in the recent past.

Meanwhile, several leading sugar importers have requested the Finance Ministry to remove the control price imposed on sugar.

Earlier a control price was announced for rice and later the government took steps to remove that control price.
