A group of residents in the Periyaparanthan area in Kilinochchi today (30) staged a protest in front of the Karachchi Divisional Secretariat against the plans to open a liquor store in the area.
Protesters stated that the majority of the people in Periyaparanthan village were working as hired laborers and that businessmen in the area were preparing to open a liquor store to extort money from the people.
The protesters stated that about 500 families live in the village and that the opening of liquor outlets will increase the economic issues of the people.
They stated that the opening of liquor outlets near schools and several temples was also an issue for children in the area.
Excise officials arrived at the scene and the protesters also protested against them.
Hiru regional correspondent stated that the protest ended after the Karachi Divisional Secretary promised that a proper solution would be found through discussions on the issue.
