The Panamure Ath Raja was an elephant king who caused great controversy in the country and paid with his life for his species.

We inquired about the fate of the last elephant kraal in the country, the Panamure Eth Gala, which came to be known by the name of this elephant king.

Panamure Eth Gala Village is located at a distance of about 12 km on Kolonna road from Embilipitiya town.

This elephant kraal which belonged to the Maduwanwela Walawwa has been trading elephants for about 1600 years.

There is also evidence that this elephant kraal was established around the Panamure area due to its historical water spring. The main reason for this was the presence of salt-mixed brackish water in the spring, which was preferred by wild elephants.

This last Kraal was made significant by a Defiant Bull Elephant who refused to be captured and finally shot dead. The public outcry of this killing was so huge that the government passed a law banning Elephant Kraals, capture and killing of elephants, forever changing the fate of all Sri Lankan Elephants. This bull was iconised as “Panamure Eth Raja” and became a part of Sri Lankan popular history.

However, this place which was supposed to be for the benefit of future generations is now on the verge of destruction due to the neglect of those responsible.

Authorities need to pay close attention to this historic site, which could be turned into a tourist attraction.
