The Public Utilities Commission has given permission to the Electricity Board to cut power for seven and a half hours today in the face of the fuel crisis that has prevailed after 26 years.

Accordingly, the power cuts will be in five stages, five hours during the day and two and a half hours during the night.

Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, the Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission Janaka Ratnayake said that legal action would be taken against the Central Bank and the Treasury if they did not allocate funds within a week to obtain fuel for the thermal power plants.

In such a situation the Minister of Power Gamini Lokuge stated that steps will be taken to purchase diesel and furnace oil directly required for power plants per month.

Meanwhile, consumers were severely inconvenienced due to the lack of fuel yesterday as well.

However, a ship carrying 37,300 metric tons of diesel is scheduled to reach the island this afternoon.

A ship carrying 35,300 metric tons of petrol has already arrived in the island and unloading has already begun.
