In addition to the import restrictions, the Special Commodity Levy on 9 items including imported fruits has been increased.

Accordingly, taxes have been increased by Rs. 200 per kilo for apples, Rs. 100 for a kilo of grapes, Rs. 75 for a kilo of oranges and Rs. 100 for a kilo of pomegranates.

The Ministry of Finance stated that this will be effective for a period of 6 months starting from the 10th of March.

Similarly, tax hike items include imported yoghurt and dates.

Recently, the import of 367 non-essential items was restricted, including imported fruits.

In addition, fruit importers point out that this increase in special commodity levy on imported fruits will also increase their prices.

Therefore the current tax including the increase oer Kg would be as follows;

Yoghurt 1000.00
Butter 1,000.00
Dates 200.00
Oranges 200.00
Apples 300.00
Fruits (other) - 300.00
