The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, the General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) organization, to 9 months imprisonment for his defamatory statement about the religion of Islam.
In addition to the prison sentence, Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasena imposed a fine of Rs. 1,500 on the defendant.
The case was filed by the police under Section 291 of the Penal Code, accusing Ven. Gnanasara Thero of making a statement during a press conference on July 16, 2016, in Kirulapone, where he described Islam as "a cancer" that "must be eradicated," which was deemed to violate ethnic harmony.
