United Nations officials have called for immediate international assistance for Myanmar following a devastating earthquake that has left 2,719 dead and is expected to surpass 3,000. With the monsoon season approaching, UN representatives warn that the situation could deteriorate further.

Marcoluigi Corsi, the UN’s acting humanitarian and resident coordinator, emphasized the urgent need for drinking water, food, shelter, medicine, and hygiene supplies after significant damage to buildings, roads, and bridges. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stressed the importance of swift action to prevent further suffering.

Myanmar’s military ruler Min Aung Hlaing confirmed 2,719 deaths, 4,521 injuries, and 441 missing, most of whom are feared dead. The 7.7 magnitude quake, Myanmar’s strongest in over a century, struck on Friday, causing extensive destruction in Mandalay and the capital Naypyitaw.

Rescue efforts are hampered by infrastructure damage and the country’s ongoing civil war. The UN’s special envoy for Myanmar, Julie Bishop, has urged all parties to cease hostilities and allow humanitarian access. Meanwhile, rebel forces announced a unilateral ceasefire to facilitate relief efforts.

The military, accused of atrocities since its 2021 coup, continues to battle a widespread rebellion. In neighboring Thailand, the earthquake’s death toll has risen to 21, with rescuers searching for survivors in a collapsed Bangkok skyscraper.
