The overall inflation rate in Sri Lanka, as measured by the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI), saw an increase to -1.9% in March 2025, according to the latest data from the Department of Census and Statistics. This marks a rise from the -3.9% recorded in February 2025.


A breakdown of the data reveals that food inflation also experienced an uptick, reaching 0.8% in March compared to -1.1% in the preceding month. Similarly, the year-on-year inflation for non-food items rose to -4.1% in March, up from -6.0% in February.


The contribution of food commodities to the overall inflation rate was 0.35% in March when compared to February 2025.


The NCPI for all items stood at 206.0 in March 2025, indicating a slight decrease of 0.2 index points from February.
