Six years ago today, a barbaric attack stole the lives of many and left countless others trapped in the harrowing memories of that day.

Innocent young lives, barely glimpsed at the world, were among the victims, their fate sealed by a bomb that also shackled the futures of others.

In Batticaloa, little Eliza Debby had her sight snatched away by the blast, and yet she remains resilient and quietly determined to persevere.

In 2019, the Zion Church in Batticaloa became a target in the Easter Sunday Attacks, claiming 31 lives.

Scattered shrapnel and the ruins of shattered walls serve as grim reminders of the atrocity.

Debby had gone to church that fateful Easter Sunday with her mother, father, and brother.

She returned home with her brother as an orphan, and blinded.

Debby is now 12 years old.

Her first words in Braille were "Amma" (mother) and "Thaththa" (father).

"I only heard one sound," Eliza recounts.

"It was only when I felt the pain that I realised I was injured. I wasn't conscious at that moment. After a while, when I regained consciousness, I had many injuries all over my body. A part of my arm was injured, but I couldn't feel it."
