Portugal's government stated earlier today (29) that all 6.4 million electricity clients had power supplies normalised after yesterday’s (28) country-wide blackout, which authorities now suspect was caused by grid instability.

In a statement, they added that all airports were operating, with some recovery still underway in Lisbon.

Similarly, all train services across the nation are currently in operation.

Furthermore, it was confirmed that schools and the health service had fully stabilised.

Power was also restored in 99% of Spain.

Spain, Portugal and some of South-West France suffered a massive power cut on Monday (28), with major cities including Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon among those affected.

Spain and Portugal declared a state of emergency.

Houses, offices, trains, traffic lights, and even the Madrid Open Tennis tournament were all hit, causing chaos for millions of people and prompting a scramble by the Spanish and Portuguese governments and network operators to understand the problem and race to fix it.

The Portuguese prime minister, Luís Montenegro, said that the issue originated in Spain.

Portugal said a “rare atmospheric phenomenon” had caused a severe imbalance in temperatures that led to the widespread shutdowns.

Authorities are yet to establish why the outage occurred, Sanchez said, after Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro insisted there was "no indication" of a cyber attack.

Experts say it might take weeks to figure out what caused the meltdown.
