Tuesday, 01 January 2013 - 13:08

The UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Gabriela Knaul, stated in a news release yesterday urged the authorities of Sri Lanka to reconsider the impeachment of the Chief Justice.

Gabriela Knaul said the procedure for the removal of the Chief Justice is politicized and characterized by lack of transparency.

However, when speaking to our news team the chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee Anura Priyadharshana Yapa had previously stated that all investigative activities are being carried out according to Parliamentary standing orders.

Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapakse speaking at a function held recently in Colombo stated that the impeachment report will be reviewed by an independent panel.
