The British government today joined the European Union and human rights organizations worldwide to condemn the beheading of Sri Lankan housemaid Rizana Nafeek by Saudi Arabian authorities on Wednesday.

Commenting on the execution of Rizana Nafeek Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Alistair Burt condemned the execution despite the many appeals for her sentence to be commuted.

The statement said the UK opposes all use of the death penalty as a matter of principle, whatever the crime committed.

Meanwhile, EU foreign affairs head Catherine Ashton said The European Union too expresses its dismay that Saudi Arabia had beheaded a Sri Lankan maid convicted of murdering her employer’s baby, despite repeated appeals for a stay of execution.

However against this backdrop the Imam of the Muttur Mosque M.M. Kareem states that Rizana Nafeek was sentenced to death in accordance with Sharia law.

He also noted that a special prayer service would be held at the mosque in honour of the late Rizana Nafeek.
