Parliament is due to convene at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning in a bid to nominate a new Chief Justice.
According to sources letters in this regard have been forwarded to relevant members of cabinet.
Moreover informed sources state that the name of former Attorney General Mohan Peiris has been nominated for the post.
This was confirmed by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who expressed remarks in this regard while addressing a function which organised by the National Bar Association this morning.
Wickremesinghe made the following observations with regards to the appointment of the new Chief Justice.
According to the 18th amendment to the constitution the composition of parliamentary council includes the Speaker, President, Premier, Opposition Leader & two MP's both from the opposition as well as the government representing minorities.
However it is reported that neither Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe nor parliamentarian D.M. Swaminathan have attended a single session of the parliamentary council.
According to United National Party sources the duo will not be present during tomorrows meeting.
