A welcome ceremony for welcoming new Chief Justice Mohan Peiris is scheduled to be held at the Colombo Hulstdorp Court Complex at 10 a.m. today.

Former BASL Vice Chairman Anomaa Gunatilake told our news team that a majority of the country's lawyers would participate in this function.

However BASL Secretary Sanjaya Gamage told our news team that the BASL lawyers would not participate in the ceremony for welcoming the new Chief Justice scheduled to be held today.

The BASL Secretary said further that his association would not participate in the ceremony according to the proposals passed at the convention held on December 15th.

Currently there are more than 14,000 lawyers in Sri Lanka.

Only about 3000 persons participated at the December 15th convention.

However Attorney at law Pratibhaa Mahaanaamahewaa said that the BASL's chairman's address at the welcome function held when a new chief justice was appointed, was only a tradition.

He said further that former Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake did not hold such a ceremony.
