Either execute or set free; Protest in Bogambara concluded

The protest initiated at approximately 10am today by 3 inmates of the Bogambara prison who have been sentenced to death has come to a conclusion.


Their demand was that either the authorities have to execute them or set them free.


The 3 inmates have been convicted of murder and hail from the Eastern Province.


However, a discussion has been held in the afternoon under the patronage of Prison Director Thissa Jayasinghe and according to a spokesperson at the prison, there are 118 inmates in the Bogambara prison, who have been sentenced to death.


Inmates who have been sentenced to death are housed in the Bogambara prison in Kandy and Welikada prison in Colombo.


There are 241 inmates who have been sentenced to death in the Welikada prison and in addition there are 154 inmates who have been sentenced to life in prison.


The last execution of a prisoner in Sri Lanka was carried out on the 23rd of June in 1976.
