Five commuters who were arrested at the Colombo-Fort Railway station for behaving in an unruly manner when officials attempted to check their passes have been placed under remand custody until tomorrow by Colombo-Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijerathna.

The tense situation had arisen when railway checkers had boarded the Samudradevi train from the Rathmalana train station this morning and had commenced checking boarding passes of passengers.

Subsequently the checkers had arrested a group of individuals who had travelled on board second class while having obtained third class tickets.

During the raid 45 commuters were placed under arrest.

According to Superintendent of Railway Security, Senaka Jayasena, two individuals out of this group had been placed under arrest for having travelled devoid of passes, while the rest had been arrested for travelling in a non-specified class which had not been contained in their boarding pass.

However several commuters charged that they had been harassed during the spot check.

Nonetheless these allegations were refuted by Superintendent of Railway Security Senaka Jayasena.
