Sri Lanka cricket close the doors for Thilanga Sumathipala.

Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage stated that the nomination submitted by Thilanga Sumathipala for the position of chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket has been rejected.

This was after having considered the recommendations made by the committee that was appointed to probe the charges levelled against Thilanga Sumathipala.

The Sports Minister speaking to our news team stated that the reason for this decision was since Thilanga Sumathipala had violated regulations under 15/1 of the sports act.

Following the amendments made to clause 15 of the sports act in January

Thilanga Sumathipala’s nomination was rejected based on laws and regulations stated in 3 sub clauses.

The first sub clause states that any individual who is a journalist in the print media or an individual who owns such a media network cannot contest for an election of Sri Lanka Cricket.

The 2nd sub clause states that any individual who directly or by proxy, produces, stores, sells or distributes equipment and other paraphernalia related to that sport, that individual cannot contest for an election of Sri Lanka Cricket.

The other sub clause under clause 15 of the sports act clearly states that any individual directly or indirectly involved in gambling activities cannot contest for an election of Sri Lanka Cricket.

Thilanga Sumathipala handed over nomination for the chairmanship of SLC on the 27th of February.

However, Country's three top sports clubs, Baduruliya, Kegalle and Sebastian Night, filed objections against the nomination Thilanga Sumatipala had handed in.

A 3-member committee was appointed by Sports Minister Mahindanda Aluthgamage for probing the charges filed against Thilanga Sumatipala who had handed over his nomination for the post of Cricket Board Chairman.

The 3 member committee comprised of secretary to the sports ministry Anura Jayawickrama, Attorney at Law Panduka Keerthinanda and a former official of the Auditor General’s department B M K Mohottala.

After handing over the report to the sports minister the said report was handed over to the Attorney General for further investigations.

The attorney General announced that the sports minister have the power to reject nominations against the sports act.

Sports Minister stated that according to the 3 member committee report, according to the sports act Thilanga Sumathipala have no legal provisions to contest for the SLC elections, hence his nomination was rejected.

Speaking further to our news team Sports Minister Mahindanada Aluthgamage stated that the decision was announced to Sri lanka cricket.
