Gallows in Sri Lanka have been established only in Welikada and Bogambara prisons.

The lack of an executioner caused concern for the department of prisons and two executioners were employed following interviews several months ago.

However, they were removed from their posts for dereliction of duty during their training period.

Appeals lodged by them have also been rejected.

Under these circumstances the Department of Prisons has decided to establish a pool of executioners and prison guards and intelligence officers will also be included in this pool which will comprise of 15 individuals.

Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera expressed the following views regarding this.
