Perpetrators of Utahayan news paper attack will be brought to book; Media Minister

Minister of Mass Media & Information Keheliya Rambukwella states that all necessary instructions has been dispensed to authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the attack which took place on the Jaffna office of the Uthayan news paper this morning.


Adressing a media briefing which was held in Kandy today minister Rambukwella noted that certain parties which advocated terrorism were guilty of committing such acts.


An armed group which had arrived at the Uthayan news paper office in Kasthur-yar lane Jaffna had carried out the attack during the wee hours of today.


According to the Police Media Unit the Group had set ablaze press equipment as well.


Proprietor of the Uthayan News paper TNA Parliamentarian E. Sarwanabhawan speaking to our news team expressed the following views on the attack which was carried out this morning.




Meanwhile issuing a release the United National Party vehemently condemned the attack.


The release issued bearing the signature of party General Secretary MP Thissa Aththanayeke stressed that it was the responsibility of a democratically elected government to safeguard the freedom of expression.


Moreover during a media briefing convened by the ‘Activists to Safeguard Human Rights, its Executive Committee Member attorney at law Udul Premarathna expressed the following views in this regard.




However Director General of the Media Centre for National Security Lakshman Hulugalle cast doubt that the attack may be the work of an insider group.




An attack on the Uthayan news papers Kilinochchi office took place on the 03rd of this month resulting in the injury of two employees.
