Minister of Petroleum Resources Anura Priyadharshana Yapa today filed a response to allegations that the price of electricity was being increased due to the price hike in furnace oil dispensed to the Ceylon Electricity Board.

Speaking to our news team Minister Yapa dismissed these allegations as baseless & unfounded.

Secretary to the Ministry of Power & Energy M.M.C Ferdinando speaking to our news team yesterday noted that the price of electricity tariffs was increased due to the rising cost of furnace oil provided to the CEB.

Against this backdrop the Ministry of Power & Energy stated that it had formulated plans to produce electricity through the assistance of coal power plants during the next 6 months.

According to the Secretary to the Ministry of Power & Energy if these plans were materialized, the CEB would be capable of providing electricity at a lower cost.

The views of Energy Specialist Dr. Thilak Siyambalapitiya were sought by our news team in this regard.
