Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana said yesterday in parliament that substandard varieties of Basmati rice are currently sold in the local markets.

Answering to UNP MP P.Harison, Minister Abeywardana said that the import of such low quality Basmati rice will not be allowed in the future.

When our news team contacted the Agriculture Minister to obtain elaborated details on the matter, he said a market research conducted by the ministry found that the Basmati rice currently available for sale was of inferior in quality.

He said samples of quality Basmati rice are already on hands of the customs officials to identify the permitted varieties to the country.

The Minister said the Sri Lanka Customs has been instructed to not allow low quality stocks of Basmati rice coming into the local markets and return them immediately to their port of origin.
