Minister of Power & Energy Pavithra Devi Wanniarachchi states that 50 percent of the countries population would not be affected by the electricity tariff hike.

 

The Minister however noted that various political groups were attempting to control the situation to their own advantage in order to gain political leverage.

 

Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi made this observation while addressing a gathering which was held in Balangoda-Imbulpe today.

UNP MP & party Media Spokesperson Gayantha Karunathilleke during a media briefing held in Colombo today added that the government had arbitrarily increased the price of electricity despite alternatives.

Meanwhile the Inter Company’s Trade Union Federation called in a special meeting of its Central Working Committee in a bid to ascertain if it was possible to gain the support of the private sector during the planned general strike which has been scheduled for the 21st of this month.

 

Chairman of the Inter Company’s Trade Union federation Wasantha Samarasinghe speaking here expressed the following views.

Moreover political parties as well as trade unions which have organized a protest march against the price hike in electricity tariffs met with leaders of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress today, in a bid to garner their support for the march.

 

Leader of the SLMC Rauff Hakeem had however notified these delegates that the parties Supreme Council had already arrived at a final decision in this regard.

 

Against this backdrop Leader of the New Left front Wasudewa Nanayakkara states that he would not support any course of action against the revisal of electricity tariffs.

 

Minister Nanayakkara however noted that he did not oppose the notion of protests in this regard.
