Risk of landslides in 7 districts; impact of cyclone continues.

The National Building Research Organisation warned of landslides risks in Ratnapura, Matale, Galle, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts if rains continued in the next 24 hours.


Deputy Director of the Disaster Management Centre Sarath Lal Kumara said that the inclement weather has distressed the lives of many people in several districts and 7 deaths were reported due to adverse weather.


The tropical cyclone in the South west Bay of Bengal was centered about 650 kilo meters to the North-East of Trincomalee yesterday.


It was predicted that it was likely to move away from the island in a northward direction.


Disaster Management Centre sources said the coastal areas extending from Jaffna to Hambantota via Batticaloa experienced strong winds, rough conditions and intermittent rain yesterday.


Fairly strong South-westerly winds were experienced over Sri Lanka and the neighborhood.


Duty Meteorologist Meril Mendis said Intermittent rain was reported in Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts.
