No registration of political parties or alliances; says Elections Commissioner

Tuesday, 14 May 2013 - 19:14

Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that no new political alliances or parties be registered by now as the court is hearing a case regarding Pudukuduyerippu and Muhudubadapattu Pradeshiya Sabhas of the Mullativu district.

Despite media reports about certain parties currently forming various political alliances, the Commissioner said no such party would be registered.

Earlier the Department of Elections had fixed dates to hold elections for Pudukuduyerippu and Muhudubadapattu Pradeshiya Sabhas of the Mulaitivu district.

When journalists questioned about the proposed Northern elections, the Commissioner had this to say.

Meanwhile June 1st of the year was declared as Voters’ Day.

The registration of voters will begin tomorrow and it will continue until July 15th.

The authorities would enlist only permanent residential voters in the particular district election registration list, and try to block other occupants who are staying in the area for temporary reasons.
