President due to leave for China today

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to leave for China tonight.


The Presidents visit to China from the 27th of May to the 30th is expected to further boost close ties between the two countries.


President Rajapaksa is visiting China based on an invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.


This will be President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s first visit to China after the new leadership assumed power.


China has assisted Sri Lanka with large scale economic assistance and continues to provide the island develop its infrastructure.


China has assisted Sri Lanka in building the new port at Hambantota besides modernizing the Colombo port.


In a telephone conversation with President Rajapaksa after taking office in March this year China’s President Xi Jinping had assured Sri Lanka of its support to safeguard its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
