FUTA against the new appointment

The Federation of University Teachers Alliance states that Dr. Kumara Hirimburegama who has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of the Colombo University has been served two weeks notice to vacate his post.

Recently a ballot was held to select the Vice Chancellor of the Colombo University & Professor Lakshman Dissanayeke secured more votes during the ballot over Dr.Kumara Hirimburegama.

The FUTA states that it does not commend the appointment of Dr. Kumara Hirimburegama as the news Vice Chancellor of the Colombo University, who according to the alliance is less qualified.

Chairman of the FUTA Dr.Nirmal Ranjith states that his association has decided to preclude from supporting Dr. Kumara Hirimburegama to carryout his duties

in his capacity as Vice Chancellor of the Colombo University who is also incidentally the husband of Professor Kumara Hirimburegama, who serves as the Chairman of the University Grants Commission.


When contacted in this regard Secretary to the Ministry of Education Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawarathna noted that the appointment of Dr. Kumara Hirimburegama had been made by the President based on the powers endowed by the countries constitution.
