National Freedom Front brings 13th amidst public

The government is drawing up plans to revise the elections act enabling those displaced in the countries North & East to cast their ballots.

Accordingly the existing Voter Registration Act number 41 of 1980 would be revised, paving way for a new draft bill to be presented before parliament on the 6th of June.

According to Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya those in the North & East who were unable to register themselves under the existing voter registration list would be able to register themselves under an ancillary list.

Executive Director of the Peoples Action for a Free & Fair Election or PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi this process should be done in a transparent manner.


Recently the Elections Special Provisions Act was given the ‘go ahead’ by cabinet to be amended, enabling original settlers of the countries North to be recognized as registered voters, subsequent to their displacement & settlement in other parts of the country.


Meanwhile the National Freedom Front states that an awareness programme would be carried out island wide by the party from the 3rd to the 12th of June, on the ill effects which the 13th amendment might convey.

Polit Bureau member of the NFF & former Parliamentarian Piyasiri Wijenayeke speaking in this regard noted that his party was prepared to engage the division of the country which would be made a reality through the 13th amendment.


Moreover the JHU has submitted a private members motion with concern to the 13th amendment.
