2 post mortems baffle relatives of a dead person

2 post mortems held by the authorities on a body of a resident in Malkaduwawa Kurunegala have baffled the relatives of the diseased.


24-year-old Onil Shamindra Goonetilaka was admitted to Colombo National Hospital after he met with an accident at Mundalama in Puttalam on July 25 in 2012, and later he was transferred to Kurunegala Teaching Hospital on August 31.


Onil died while receiving treatment at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital on June 1, and his post mortem stated the cause of death was a heart attack.


Meanwhile Mundalama police and Kurunegala city coroner visited Onil’s house yesterday night and informed that they obtained a court order to hold another post mortem anew.


Accordingly, the new post mortem stated that Onil died of pneumonia.


Relatives say that they are inconvenienced as to believe which reason did cause the death of their relative.


Hence the body was taken to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital and a second autopsy was performed and the report issued states that the cause of death was an accident and pneumonia.


Dulani Gunathilake, the sister of the deceased Shamindra Gunathilake spoke to our news team and expressed the following views regarding the difficulties faced.




Upon inquiry by our news team, the Kurunegala city coroner R. U. B. K. Amarasinghe stated that the emergency autopsy was carried out based on a court order and that the body was sealed and released to the relatives afterwards.


Our news team inquired regarding this from the Mundalama Police and a police spokesperson stated that a court case is still being heard regarding this accident that occurred in 2012.


The spokesperson further stated that since facts need to be presented in court regarding the accident, a court order had been obtained to conduct the autopsy.


The first autopsy was performed in the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital with the death being treated as a normal death.
