Freedom party central committee approval for cabinet decision on 13th amendment

SLFP Central Committee has approved the decision taken at the cabinet meeting yesterday with regard to the 13th amendment.


The SLFP Central Committee met last afternoon with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the chair.


The cabinet yesterday approved appointing a parliamentary select committee for discussing about removing the clause in the 13th amendment pertaining to merging two or more provincial councils and for discussing about other amendments.


A senior SLFP leader told our news team that the subject was discussed extensively at the Central Committee meeting held yesterday.


In addition attention was drawn at the meeting with regard to holding the North, Central and North Western Provincial Council elections.


Focus was drawn on holding these provincial council elections next September.


Meanwhile the SLFP also decided yesterday to appoint steering committees comprising three ministers for conducting the election activities in the three provinces.


Accordingly steering committees will be appointed with Minister Maitripala Sirisena heading the committee for the North Western Province; Steering committee for the Central Province will be appointed with Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva as the head.


The steering committee for the Northern province will be appointed with Minister Susil Premajayantha as head.
