Pakistan has been facing a serious security deficit since the beginning of the Afghanistan conflict in late 2001.

Local Taliban militants, hiding in the north-western tribal territories of the country, have killed thousands of people.

Inspired by Al Qaeda's Islamist ideology, these militants have frequently indulged in urban terrorism, targeted military installations and killed innocent civilians and security personnel across the country.
