The Provincial Councillor who made the teacher kneel resigns

Puttalam district Leader and Senior Minister Milroy Fernando said that the UPFA North Western Provincial Council Member Ananda Sarath Kumara has sent his resignation to the Provincial Governor Tissa R. Balalla this afternoon.

He also said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party too has asked the Provincial Councilor to resign from the post and also to make an apology to the humiliated female teacher.


Meanwhile addressing a ceremony held at the Ministry of Education Minister Bandula Gunawardana insisted that no politician despite his party differences has right to punish school teachers.




Meanwhile North Western Provincial Council Opposition Leader Shamal Senarath told its monthly meeting that Ananda Sarath Kumara’s unbecoming act has brought disrepute on the entire members of the Council.


At this moment, a tense situation was erupted and the meeting was confined to 45 minutes.


Later North Western Provincial Council Opposition Leader Shamal Senarath commented on the situation.




However Chief Minister of the North Western Provincial Council Athula Wijesinghe said that comments should not be made on Anada Sarath Kumara as legal actions have already been initiated against him.


Later the meeting was adjourned till July 2 after the power supply was interrupted in the Council chambers.


Meanwhile Ananda Sarath Kumara’s act was taken for discussion at the Central Provincial Council meeting as well, and its Opposition insisted that Sarath Kumara should make an apology to the humiliated teacher.


Peaceful protests against the North Western Provincial Councilor member’s unbecoming act were held at several places. The Lanka Teachers Association, students and teachers of Narammala Mayurapada Central College and Primary Section, Anamaduwa Kottukachchiya Navodya Maha Vidyalaya and Pannala National School in Puttalam were among them.


Meanwhile a UNP MP asked about the legal actions taken against the suspected Provincial Councilor in parliament today.


Replying to the UNP MP, UPFA Kurunegala District MP Shantha Bandara said that steps have already been taken to sack the suspected Provincial Councilor from the party.


As public protests have been rising against the unwelcoming act of a Provincial Councilor’s forcing a teacher to kneel down, the son of a Pradeshiya Sabha member of Mihintale has reported assaulting his principal of the Nivantaka Chetiya Maha Vidyalaya in Anuradhapura today.
