MP Arundika Fernando to courts

The Homagama Magistrate ordered today UPFA MP Arundika Fernando to appear in court to give evidence in the missing Journalist Pradeep Eknaligoda case on July 16.


The Magistrate issued the order at a request by the lawyer of the missing journalist’s wife Sanya Eknaligoda.


MP Arundika Fernando made a statement in parliament on June 5 and said that Journalist Eknaligoda is living in France.


The MP making another statement on June 7 said that his friend Manjula Wediwardana pointed to a person and introduced him as Pradeep Eknaligoda.


Later MP Arundika Fernando made several statements to different local media.  


When the case was heard at the Homagama Magistrate’s Court, attorney at Law Upul Kumarapperuma who is representing the petitioner requested from the courts to call parliamentarian Arundika Fernando as a witness and issue summons in that effect.


Following this attorney at law Chaminda Athukorala who was representing the Attorney General, expressed his views.


He stated that since Arundika Fernando is a member of parliament, he would not oppose summoning MP Fernando to courts in a way that will not interfere with Parliamentary Privileges.


Speaking later attorney at law Upul Kumarapperuma stated that MP Fernando will be summoned to courts to inquire regarding the statement made by the MP to various media institutions regarding this and that this will not be a violation of Parliamentary Privileges.


MP Arundika Fernando expressed the following views during the edition of Hard Talk broadcast on Hiru News on the 15th regarding the Pradeep Eknaligoda incident.
