Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris while in a visit to Australia has mentioned that members of the LTTE are involved in the people-smuggling business bringing Sri Lankan boatpeople to Australia.

Professor G.L. peiris wants Australia to proscribe the LTTE as a terrorist organization, making any support to it from Australia illegal.

The LTTE is a proscribed terrorist organization in Europe and North America but not in Australia.

Expressing his views to the media in Sydney last week Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris said that although the war between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE is over, Tamil Tiger networks still intimidate Tamil families in the diaspora and extort money from them, as well as engaging in a range of other criminal activities.

According to Professor G.L. Peris people-smuggling has long been a key revenue raiser for the Tamil Tigers.
