The acting OIC of the Dikwella Police and 16 other police officers have been transferred due to a clash which broke out between area residents & police.

 

According to Police Media Spokesperson SP Buddhika Siriwardhana these officers have been transferred to the Matara Police Headquarters.

 

Area residents charge that police officers attached to the Dikwalla police had carried out an assault on a group of individuals who had been rehearsing for a perahera in the Nilwalla area last night.

 

2 of the victims are currently receiving treatment at the Matara General Hospital.

 

According to a hospital spokesperson the victims are said to be in a non serious condition.

 

Meanwhile a protest was launched in the Dikwalla town this morning deploring the attack.

 

The protest subsequently gathered at the Dikwella Pradeshiya Sabha grounds.

 

Several eye witnesses who took part in this mornings protest expressed the following views to our news team.

However when contacted, a spokesperson for the Dikwella police denied any involvement in the incident.

 

It was also noted that police had attempted to act based on a complaint that it had received which had been to the effect that several intoxicated individuals had been interrupting the rehearsal of the perahera.
