A new DIG for Colombo North made vacant by Vaas Gunawardhana

A new DIG in charge of Colombo North has been appointed with immediate effect.

The police headquarters announced that DIG,  L. G. Kularatne who had served in charge of Trincomalee had been appointed DIG Colombo North with effect from yesterday.

Former Colombo North DIG Vas Gunawardhanna has been remanded in connection with the incident of killing of a Bambalapitiya millionaire businessman.

The IGP had also interdicted him earlier.

However an acting DIG had been earlier appointed in charge of Colombo North rendered vacant by DIG Vaas Gunawardhana.

While four police officers in addition to former Colombo North DIG have by now been remanded in connection with the incident, they are scheduled to be produced before court day-after-tomorrow

Meanwhile, Parts of a mobile phone believed to be utilized during the abduction of millionaire businessmen in the Bamabalapitiya area to which former DIG Vaas Gunawardhana is suspected to be implicated were recovered yesterday.

The parts of the mobile phone were recovered from a canal in the Maligawaththa-Keththarama area.

According to the Criminal Investigation Department the recovered mobile phone is suspected to have been used by Mohammed Siyam who is the deceased victim.

The assistance of Navy divers was obtained to recover the parts of the mobile phone.
