Commissioner of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya states that the Northern Provincial Polls would be held on either the 21st or the 28th of September.

Addressing a media briefing which was held at the Elections Secretariat this morning Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya noted that the time factor was insufficient to convene polls on either the 7th or the 14th, when functioning according to the new Elections Registration Act.

However the Commissioner of Elections during this morning’s media briefing conceded the fact that international observers should be permitted to observe the Northern polls.

Speaking in this regard he noted that a final decision would be reached subsequent to discussions with all relevant political parties who have submitted their nominations for the Northern polls.
