Final decision on proposed bus fare hike on the 27th of this month

Monday, 24 June 2013 - 19:57

The final decision regarding a proposed bus fare hike done in line with the national bus fare policy is due to be announced on the 27th of this month.

A discussion in this regard between relevant stake holders was held at the National Transport Commission this morning.

Minister of Private Transport C.B. Rathnayeke speaking here noted that a period of two days was needed to obtain the views of relevant bus companies with regards to the proposed revision in bus fares.

The annual revision to bus fares has been scheduled for the 1st of July.

Private bus companies this year around have requested for a 10% hike in bus fares.

However according to the information made available this year’s bus fare hike would witness a 7% increase.

Meanwhile the All Ceylon Private Bus Owners Association did not take part in today’s discussion which was held at the premises of the NTC.

General Secretary of the ACPBOA Anjana Priyanjith expressing his views in this regard noted that a 10% increase in bus fares was unwarranted.

In the interim Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association Gamunu Wijerathna during a recent media briefing noted that a 10% increase in bus fares was imperative.

He noted that if this request was not heeded, the National Transport Commission would be brought to its knees.
