Former Pradeshiya Sabha member who made teacher kneel given bail; Teachers in Puttlam go on sick leave

North Western former PC member Ananda Sarath Kumara who remanded in connection with forcing a teacher to kneel down was released on bail today.


When the case is taken for hearing today, Anamaduwa District Judge Ranga Dissanayake released the suspect on 5 thousand rupees cash bail and 2 personal bails for 1 thousand rupees each.


The judge also ordered the former PC member to report to the Navagaththegama police on every Friday.

The suspect was also warned not to intimidate or make influences on the witnesses of the case.

Moreover the District Judge today issued notice to the Principal of the Nawagaththegama Nawodya School to appear before court on the 25th of July when the case will be called up again.

Expressing his views to our news team stated that teachers in the Puttlam education zone had obtained sick leave opposing the teacher being made to kneel.

When the case was convened today representatives of several trade unions as well as teachers from the Puttlam Educational Zone arrived at the premises of the Anamaduwa Court complex.

Subsequently a tense situation arose between teacher trade union representatives & police.


Meanwhile teachers & parents engaged in a protest sporting black bands before the Rathnapura Infant Jesus Convent, denouncing a death threat which had been issued  to a teacher of the school.
