The Inter University Students Federation engaged in a protest today before the Ministry of Higher Education chanting slogans against the systematic destruction of the free education system.

Students who marched in procession from the University of Jayawardhanapura arrived at the Ministry of Higher Education this afternoon along the Highlevel road.

According to our correspondent the march had caused considerable traffic congestion on the Highlevel road.

The protesters at present are said to engage in a sit-in vigil before the Ministry of Higher Education located at ward place impeding vehicular traffic.

However during a media briefing which was held in Colombo yesterday Minister S.B. Dissananyeke issued a warning against the participants of today protest.

According to the Convener of the Inter University Students Federation a majority of students had taken part in today protest despite the obstacles.

Students who engaged in the protest expressed their dismay at the government in the following manner.

Meanwhile police afforded 4 students the opportunity to meet officials at the Ministry of Higher Education.

However at this juncture IUSF activists had demanded an audience with the Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayeke creating a tense verbal exchange between protesting students and police.

Convener of the IUSF Sanjeewa Bandara who is still engaged in the protest which is being staged before the Ministry of Higher Education in Ward Place expressed these views to the media.
